If you're a retailer that issues gift cards, beware that some states require you to cash out their balance upon request when the remaining value hits a specified threshold. Home Depot got dinged in California last month for losing sight of that requirement - and now their self-checkout POS stations at CA stores have to automatically cash out gift cards with a balance below $10.00.

#WhyRealtime - #giftcards are yet another intermediary that is ultimately problematic. If you've been around long enough, likely you have misplaced a gift card or two. This is only the tip of iceberg when it comes to issues with them. While #realtimepayments won't force you to spend money at a specific retailer, like you're granny wanted ("go out and spend a little on yourself, sweetie"), at least it won't get lost, stolen, be difficult to spend or become an issue should that store go out of business.Check out my TEN reasons why real-time is better than #prepaidcards.Well, that's it! ONE HUNDRED REASONS why real-time payments are better than other payment types. If you liked this content, let me know! COMMENT below on what you found most interesting or insightful. The past few months retailers and card issuers have been lobbying congress on credit card processing fees. The bill proposed by Senator Durbin and Senator Marshall which is titled the Credit Card Competition Act has brought many merchant behaviors to the surface, one of these is surcharging. With the exception of a few states a merchant has the right to surcharge a customer to cover the cost of card processing fees. Seems like businesses everywhere are slapping on fees today from resort fees to miscellaneous service fees.Surcharing is slapped on at the checkout. It is a bit late to reconsider your purchase at that time. Many merchants are profiting from surcharging. As of April 15, 2023, a merchant who accepts VISA branded debit and credit cards cannot surcharge more than 3% (See: https://lnkd.in/gPUD_n2V). There is a good reason for this, their costs are often much lower than 3%. Square, a major provider of card processing for small businesses currently charges 2.6% + 10 cents a transaction for in-person transactions as one example. The next time you are presented with a surcharge that is in excess of 3%, consider asking the merchant to abide by the rules. Financial institutions are scrutinized and heavily regulated (they follow a lot of rules). The picture below was from a local small business a few weeks ago. It is unfair and deceptive pricing on their part from my perspective. If this merchant has competitive card processing rates, they are more than covering their cost at 3.5%. They are making more money from charging this fee. Regardless of their cost, they should follow the rules. Also check out this post for more on the topic of fees https://lnkd.in/gcsPsCxtMary Wisniewski, Ron Shevlin, Tony DeSanctis

Fascinating report on the Credit Card Competition Act in Congress. Credit card fees per swipe are a unfair burden specifically on all businesses on main street. As a group of credit card customers (as an intermediary) they are not able to collectively bargain for smaller fees like the big box stores. This is another example of undue burdens placed on small businesses disproportionately to big boxes and how policy could and should be directly shaped to address specific niche issues like this. This policy, should it be enacted, would free small business owners up to invest in other business needs like increased wages and even offer employees benefits. The data on big business at credit card companies and their monopolies presented in this report is of particular interest. There is a hope that increased credit card competition leveling the playing field will increase merchant's choice in what cards are accepted and therefore their fees. The main point in this to me remains that perks for anyone for any use that places a disproportionate burden on small business owners is not good for individuals, community, and local economies as it affects main street player's very livelihoods. Never forget, cash is king at small businesses. Points aren't free, someone is always paying for it!

APOLOGIES.People often apologise to us for paying by card.We honestly mean it when we say, we just want you to pay by whichever means is easiest for YOU.Yes we pay card fees, but these are built into our overheads, and we'd take a LOT less bookings and get a lot fewer customers in the shop if we didn't take card, so it more than pays for itself. We also pay fees just for having a bank account to pay cash into so it's swings and roundabouts. And why shouldn't the banks and our card processing company get fees? They're providing a service and employing people to do so. Who then spend money in their local economy. Fees isn't a dirty word. Well done if you bothered to read all that. If not, basically - we just want whatever's easiest for you, our valued customers. As long as it's card or cash and not Instagram tags, obvs.

Customers are noticing some small businesses are now charging a processing fee to use a credit or debit card.Lottie Watts, Senior Manager of Media Relations for the National Retail Federation wrote to News 3, “The issue of excessive credit card “swipe fees” is a top concern for retailers and consumers.”“I would suspect for small businesses, we’re going to see more and more of those passing fees onto customers,” said Bob McNab Professor of Economics for Old Dominion University. “As credit cards increase the charges levied on small and large businesses to process transactions, it’s normal to see businesses try to shift those costs to consumers. We already see that in Europe and in Asia where it is commonplace.”Read More: https://lnkd.in/g9GgRCyVCredit: Angela Bohon WTKR News 3Moneda® is on a mission to inspire community, your spirit and create economic opportunities for all.
